All this while, it’s been just you and him. Enter the ‘third wheel,’ the proverbial serpent in your paradise.

Let’s face it …the World Cup’s a bitch. And this one’s here to stay.

Your whispered sweet nothings will be drowned in the intoxicating thud of seam on willow: you simply won’t stand a chance when you go up against cricket.

After all, ladies, who are we to challenge the laws of nature?

Here are a few tips to survive the season.

1. It’s all about you girl

Go to a spa. Try a new hair-cut or get that gold facial. Bask in the knowledge that your man is not impatiently pacing outside while gradually morphing into a cantankerous kraken. However, don’t do this to get his attention. Not this time, at any rate. He won’t notice, and that facial will be wasted behind your worry lines.

2. Lather up, ladies

Remember all those soaps you watched that he mocked so mercilessly? He’s clearly so swept up in pitch drama right now that he won’t care what in hell you’re watching.  Plus he’ll be pleasantly surprised by the abundance of pretzels and popcorn in the kitchen…let’s just pretend you got those for him. :-)

3. Fantasize with fiction

If you can’t spend time with your real-time man, there’s always company between the pages. Whether it’s Darcy, Holden Caulfield or Howard Roark who floats your boat, grab your favorite book and sip a cup of hot coffee. You’ll totally forget the existence of the better half busily rooting for India.

4. Shop till you drop

Feeling low and neglected? This doctor strongly recommends some retail therapy. This is an awesome way to pass time when your man is glued to the television. You have all the time in the world to check out those brand new stores and boutiques with your good pals Visa and MasterCard.

5. Catch up with your girl pals

Match time is a great time to catch up with your girl pals.  Arrange a ‘no boys’ getaway and unwind. PS: When you come home, your husband will either be sulking over his team’s loss or rejoicing their marginal victory; we know you don’t care, but a little empathy will go a long way.

6. Re-model your house

Start on that home improvement project you’ve been considering and make a boring house the most comfortable place on earth. Go about it the way you want and don’t bother waiting for any inputs from your partner. You won’t get many of those anyway.

7. Knock, Knock neighbour

Smile at that old woman who lives next door and start a conversation.  Trust me, the world becomes a happier place when people start emanating positive vibes. Who knows, she might well be in the same boat with her cricket-loving spouse!

8. Talk to your maid

You abhor her sullen face. But have you really bothered to learn about her life? Yes, the one she has is also called life. Now that you’re free to talk, ask her about her kids and see how she becomes a happy face.

9. Visit Mom and Dad

Go to your parents’ house and enjoy a day off. And while your mom is busy cooking your favourite butter chicken, get back to your old room and take a trip down memory lane.

10. Sharpen your skill set
