11 places in India that will make you feel like a Bollywood celebrity

If you are in India, you don’t have to be one Carl Denham and go on a hunt for that mysterious island to make a picture-perfect film. The following places will tell you why.

While the #IncredibleIndia campaign has made it perceptibly evident how beautiful our country is, celluloid portrayal of the land has been equally breathtaking. These locations made famous by Bollywood movies—or you may say, vice versa— are testimony to the above fact:

1. Athirapally Waterfalls, Kerala

Ace helmer Mani Ratnam is certainly the one who has been religiously introducing us to some really-astounding-yet-hitherto-virgin places in India. Be it pretty Preity Zinta or amazing Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in songs “Jiya jale” from Dil Se and “Barso re” from Guru respectively—the divas have had us in awe of its scenic beauty. We couldn’t agree more, falling from a height of 80 feet the cascading water seemed even more supple than the graceful moves of the divas.

2. Munnar tea fields, Kerala

The sprawling Munnar tea fields instantly conjure up a die-hard romantic Shah Rukh Khan and a Kanjeevaram-clad Deepika Padukone, both frolicking amidst the greenery. Chennai Express gives you more reasons than one to chase your beau a la SRK in the verdant vastness.

3. Fort Aguada, Goa

This rocky fort in north Goa has become a haven for many youngsters since Dil Chahta Hai hit the screen. Akash aka Aamir Khan’s proposition that “Hame har saal kam se kam ek hafte ke liye Goa ana chahiye” has been the pull factor ever since. Many scenes in Rangeela, Golmaal and Dhoom are also shot here.

4. Marine drive, Mumbai

The ‘C’ shaped or half-moon shaped boulevard in south Mumbai is generally touristy almost all the time. This 4.3 km long route stretching along the coast has been filmed so many times that we lose count. Yet the brined whiffs were refreshing in Munna Bhai MBBS and Wake Up Sid.

5. Udaipur Palace, Rajasthan

Royalty is a rich experience. And if you want to have a slice of it, Udaipur, especially the city palace is your go-to place. Movies like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Ram Leela have further popularized it.

6. Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur

Post the release of Rang De Basanti it suddenly rose to fame. This place is probably epic in the sense that if you are drunk and out, like DJ and Sukhi in the flick, the public water tank in the fort is there to handle your craziness. Remember Sukhi’s freefall into the pond?

7. Rohtang Pass

All biking enthusiasts, this is where you should scoot to.  Kareena Kapoor glorified it when she waltzed past the passage in Jab We Met. Alia Bhatt’s Highway was picturized here as well. It seems director Imtiaz Ali has taken a bit shine to it.

8. Pangong Lake, Ladakh

Its bluest-of-blue water is enough to give you an awakening like Chatur gets in 3 Idiots. The other Khan, that’s Shah Rukh, too has a memory here when he saves a drowning Anushka Sharma in Jab Tak Hai Jaan.

9. Hadimba Mandir, Manali

The woodsy marvel flanked by tall oak trees in Manali has been thronged by some famous on-screen lover boys. It has found a place in Rajesh Khanna’s Aap Ki Kasam and Rishi Kapoor’s Heena. Ranbir Kapoor’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani once again brings back Manali on our itinerary.

10. Howrah Bridge, Kolkata

From Yuva and Parineeta to Devdas and PIKU, each time a plot is set in the City of Joy, the bridge most likely finds a mention. It’s the epicenter of Bengali ethos.

11. Kashmir

Thanks to Shammi Kapoor and his immense love for Kashmir— no wonder, where else could he have managed to slide down the snow-caped mountains and sing “Yahooo”– Bollywood is blessed by some really wonderful songs and films shot at different locations in Jammu & Kashmir. Movies like Kashmir Ki Kali, Betaab, Roja, Rockstar, Highway, Haider have explored the Heaven on Earth. Hope Salman Khan’s upcoming Bajrangi Bhaijaan will add to the Kashmir chill.
