11th time unlucky! Federer knocked out of Australian Open by Andreas Seppi

It just keeps getting worse for Federer fans. The Swiss maestro has been knocked out of another major competition, another depressing reminder of the fact he is indeed human.

The man who scripted the biggest upset of the tournament so far was Italian world no. 46 Andreas Seppi, who had lost against Federer in their previous 10 encounters.

Here’s how Seppi sealed the fourth set tiebreaker and the match.

Federer fans can take respite in the fact that he did show a real fighting spirit to come back in the game from two sets down. But at the end of the day, he was still beaten by a player who has never gone beyond the fourth round in a Grand Slam tournament.

So ‘11’ is definitely an unlucky number for Fedex.

The defeat would hurt even more since Federer actually won 1 extra point than Seppi and still lost.

The current world no. 2 was in sublime form in the lead-up to the tournament, having recorded his 1000th career win at the Brisbane International less than two weeks ago.

Federer shows his class in Brisbane.

In fact his form towards the end of the 2014 season seemed extremely promising, as he made the Wimbledon finals and the semi-finals at the US Open.

However, the 3rd round exit from the year’s first Grand Slam isn’t a good sign. And perhaps it’s time for all of us to just make our peace with the fact that the Federer era is over for good.
