12-year-old singer Nilanjanaa Jayant will perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall, New York.

Nilanjanaa was rewarded with the opportunity after she won the Golden Voices of America competition. Her mother persuaded her to enter the competition and the Bengaluru girl was selected for the footage of her performing a popular Frank Sinatra jazz song called Fly me to the Moon. She was later also declared as the winner in the Musical Theater/Disney/Broadway/Jazz category.

Nilanjanaa will perform the same song at Carnegie Hall. The winners from the remaining categories too will perform with her.

The girl’s mother Sangeeta Ananth told a leading daily that she had enrolled her daughter in Carnatic music classes when she was just 6 years old. However, Nilanjanaa wasn’t too happy with the form and refused to attend the classes. She later joined Bengaluru-based music school Taaqademy founded by musicians Rajeev Rajagopal and Bruce Lee Mani. Nilanjanaa felt more at home there and was trained in western music.

Taaqademy in a Facebook post said, “We are extremely happy to announce that our student Nilanjanaa Jayant has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall New York after winning 1st Place at American Fine Arts Festival / AFAF Golden Voice of America, 2016. Her wonderful tutor Ragini Ramanathan will also be awarded a Diploma of Recognition for the same. In addition to this Nilanjanaa also gets a prestigious scholarship for the AFAF Summer Music Courses in Europe for 2017. Proud moment for all of us at Taaqademy.”
