Yakub Memon, a chartered accountant, was convicted for assisting his brother Tiger Memon and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim to carry out the terror strike that killed 257 people.

As India woke up to the news of Yakub Memon’s execution, reactions came from different quarters of the nation. While on one hand people hailed the Indian judiciary, on the other hand there were those who questioned the delay in justice.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court had rejected Yakub Memon’s mercy plea, paving way for his execution.  Here’s a look at some of the observations made by the three-member bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra:

1. Stay of death warrant could be a travesty of justice.

2. Giving 14 days’ time to Memon after rejection of mercy plea by President would be travesty of justice.

3. We dont think in a case of this nature, granting further time is necessary.

4. Really ample time was granted after rejection of first mercy petition to prepare himself for the last and final meeting with family members.

5. Rejection of first mercy petition by President could have been assailed before this court.
