5 Reasons to Love Solitude
We’ve seen them around; lone wolves lunching in secluded corners of the office pantry, or reading intently under a tree in the park, lost to the world. Ever wonder why some people, not just enjoy their own company, but need it, to pull through the day? Here are 5 reasons why these ‘Solitary Reapers’ wouldn’t have it any other way.
1) Bolsters Self-Esteem
The long introspective hours they spend in silence, help them to look deep within their being, and acquire a better understanding of who they are, their dreams and aspirations. The process of getting to know oneself, deconstructs misconceptions about one’s own personality that were built within the system of rules imposed by others around them, perhaps pushy or domineering family members and/or peers.
2) One Grows as a Person
Knowledge of oneself allows one to break free from the fetters of insecurities and brushes away the rubble of the past to expose the treasure trove of positive qualities and beauty that lay buried all this while. Insight into one’s strengths and weaknesses, adequately equips one with the tenacity to cope better with the trials and tribulations of life.
3) Makes One Independent
With self-assurance, comes the courage to think for oneself and take risks that one intuits can reform one’s life for the better. The paths you choose may not be approved by everybody, and it often happens that you lose those whom you considered your friends as a repercussion of this conflict of interest. Such individuals know the gravity of the consequences of their choice, but decide to go ahead with what they believe, realizing that it is, after all, for the best. At one point, you realize what truly matters to you, and you begin to appreciate the quality of your relationships, rather than the extent of your social network. It teaches one to let go of the unnecessary and cherish the indispensable.
4) Increases Productivity
Individual efficiency is optimum when one works alone with mindfulness and in the absence of distractions. The solitary souls we know are statistically more productive and creative than their gregarious counterparts because they channelize all their energies into the task at hand, and are not impeded by the opinions of the countless clucking hens around!
5) Inculcates Gratitude
The most potent impact of solitude, I personally feel, is a profound sense of gratitude. Spending time alone narrows down the important things in one’s life; love, joy, peace, kindness. One realizes that one has everything one needs to live life to the fullest. As a result, one is able to shut out all kinds of negativity and embrace the positive with thankfulness. A lover of solitude looks toward the quietude, therefore, to rejuvenate the soul, mind, heart and body and learns from the serenity within and without.
