The benefits of honey have been recognized from the time of the ancient Mesopotamian civilization, dating back  4000 years. The traditional Indian systems of medicine – Ayurveda and Siddha – also lay a strong emphasis on honey for therapeutic use. Now Western medical science too has joined the bandwagon confirming the health benefits of honey. Let’s explore a few of them:

1. Honey increases RBC count: When honey is mixed with tepid water and drunk, it raises the Red Blood Cells (RBC) count in the blood. This is especially beneficial to those who suffer from anemia and iron deficiency. Consuming honey improves the oxygen carrying capacity in the blood.

3. Honey in treating wounds: It has antibacterial and antioxidant properties that make it ideal for treating wounds. There was a study involving 59 patients suffering from wounds and leg ulcers who had not responded to conventional treatment.

They were treated by applying honey on their wounds and everyone barring one showed improvement.

4. Honey as an energy food: Traditional medicine systems view honey as an instant energy booster as it contains sugar molecules like glucose and sucrose. The United States National Honey Board recommends consumption of honey for it contains vitamins and minerals. So if you are looking for an instant energy boost before or after a workout, honey comes in handy.
