9 types of roommates you are most likely to run into

Growing up and moving away to a different city or country for work or studies, is an inevitable part of life. As a result, you are forced to share living space with strangers, running into a host of different characters in the process.

1) The selective miser
This roommate can be a pain to deal with. They make up long stories to avoid having to pay the maid her Diwali bonus or unforeseen plumbing costs — stolen debit card, forgot to visit the ATM, low bank balance, and so on… But the following weekend, they come home laden with shopping bags from the nearest mall.

2) The slob
Describing them as ‘messy’ would be an understatement. They think nothing of leaving the kitchen with flour strewn all over. The stove looks like it’s been marinated, and not the meat/veggies. The living room is littered with chocolate wrappers and dirty clothes, and their bedroom always smells funny. And don’t even get me started on the bathroom. Heaven help you if you have to share a bathroom with one of these specimens!

3) The chronic borrower
They seem to own nothing. You timidly suggest that they buy the things they borrow from you on a regular basis, but they never seem to act on it. The worst part about these roommates is that you are always having to remind them to return the borrowed items. They rarely remember to return it on their own.

4) The incessant whiner
This is the one with first-world problems on a daily basis and they never stop talking about them.

5) The buy-one-get-one-free roommate
This one’s girlfriend/boyfriend is always hanging out at your place. They share your meals, hog the TV, use up your groceries…you get the picture.

6) The sneak thief
Missing clothes, used-up cosmetics, and at times, missing money as well. At work, you make plans to cook proper dinner for once. You rush home all set to cook up a buzz only to realize your roommate has used up all the onions, the key ingredient in your recipe, and has not replaced them.

7) The nosy parker
You can get nothing past them. They want to know every little thing about you…what’s in your shopping bag, where did you go, what’s your salary, how much was your bonus last year…it never ends.

8) The go-getter
This roommate has motivational posters and quotes pinned up all over the room. They also have a life-goals chart stuck behind their door. They have a stack of self-help books in their room, and they are always giving you advice on how to optimize your resources to achieve maximum effectiveness.

9) The next best thing to best friend aka The One
You and your best friend may be living in different continents right now, but this roommate is a close substitute. You love hanging out with them, they clean up after themselves, you enjoy cooking with them, and watching TV with them on weeknights is THE best.
