A woman from Madhya Pradesh’s Mirzapur district sold her 9-year-old son to two carpet weavers for Rs 50,000.
The incident took place two years ago. Laxmi Chowdhary sold her minor son, Shivam to Guddu and Jahagir Ali. The boy was tortured, starved, made to work illegally and was forced to convert to islam. He was circumcised and given the name Sonu Ali.
Shivam who is 11 now, managed to escape from the abusive two men 6 months ago. After going to Mirzapur police, the child welfare committee of the district put him into a shelter and eventually reunited him with his late father’s family.
As for the mother, she was arrested by Satna district police on June 18. She reportedly had started living with another man after selling the boy.“The family reported the matter to the Satna police a week ago. We have lodged a case of human trafficking, child and bonded labour besides forceful religious conversion under the MP Freedom of Religion Act,” Satna, SP Rameshwar Yadav said.
