As topics of religious intolerance, hatred and contempt seem to hog news space, here is a feel-good story that truly is news worthy.

Sikhs and Hindus from the Malla village in the Ludhiana district of Punjab, have set an example before the world by aiding the construction of a mosque for the only Muslim family in the village. This noble act exemplifies universal brotherhood and communal harmony at a time when there’s so much communal unrest.

Approximately 5000 people populate Malla. 90% is constituted by Sikhs,  9% by Hindus and the remaining 1% by the lone Muslim family.

Reports suggest that a Masjid existed in Malla until it collapsed in 1947. The Imam of Ludhiana’s Jama Masjid had recently approached the villagers with a request to rebuild the mosque for the Muslim family in their village.

The Sikh and Hindu villagers who responded positively to the request not only aided the construction financially but also physically.
