A 19 year old MA Hindi male student from Benaras Hindu University (BHU) was gang raped by five men in a car on Aug 13. Reportedly, the incident took place in the evening, when the student was headed to the Microbiology Department of BHU’s Sir Sunderlal Hospital to get medical reports of his sister-in-law. He was stopped by Five man near the Institute of Medical.

They forced him to drink alcohol and dragged him into a car parked nearby, which carried a department logo of the university. They then drugged him and raped him in the moving vehicle and dumped him in the open grounds close to the agricultural department in the university.

The student’s whose identity is hidden, immediately called up the police after regaining consciousness. However, the police reportedly took 4 days to register the case. Despite the first medical examination having confirmed rape, he was made to undergo a second examination.

Friends and family of the victim claim that the university administration and police were trying to hush up the matter.

Chief Proctor of BHU, Satyendra Kumar Singh, said, “We are aware of the incident. What can we do if the police is delaying the investigation? The vice-chancellor is out on a visit. We will constitute an inquiry committee when he comes back. The action would be taken based on the findings of the committee.”

The victim’s mother says that her son’s mental health has deteriorated since then and fears he might commit suicide.
