A grand function organised here by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), with which he was associated for long, saw massive audience attendance to commemorate the anniversary.
The Centre, in a tribute to the legendary president and scientist, decided to include his birth place in Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) by relaxing norms for the residents.
According to AMRUT norms, cities with population over 1 lakh will be included under the scheme. However, following directions from the PM, the Centre decided include this 45,000-resident town as well under the scheme.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Its been a year since our beloved Dr APJ Abdul Kalam left us & created a void that is irreplaceable (sic). My tributes to this great personality.”

Reports stated that the Union government has approved projects worth Rs 48 crore for Rameswaram under AMRUT. Of this, Rs 45 crore will be used to improve sewerage networks and rest will be used to develop parks and open spaces.
Not just this, a Kochi-based NGO, Letter Farms, chanced upon a unique idea to pay tribute to the ‘Missile Man of India’. The NGO has invited people to pen down their sentiments about the late scientist in an art project.
The project ‘dearkalamsir’ aims to create an anthology of postcards, which attracted a humungus response and the book was launched today.
