With the unfortunate death of famous Telugu actress Aarti Agarwal following a liposuction treatment, deliberation around the safety of such fat removal procedures has increased.

Fat. The weight of the word itself can consume even the skinniest of the skinniest people in this world. But for those who want to get rid of the excess baggage, is liposuction really the best bet? Did Aarti Agarwal, who died of a cardiac arrest in New Jersey after a liposuction procedure, really have to put her life at risk to just knock off a few pounds?

Most definitely not!

In today’s fast paced world where people struggle to keep up with the momentum of a mundane life, taking time off to maintain their health and overall well-being has become quite a challenge. What’s worse is the pressure to look good, especially for those who are a part of showbiz like Aarti, continues to pile on. However, instead of opting for a more scientifically proven route of following a healthy lifestyle, most people are taking a shorter route towards looking good. One such short-cut widely used is liposuction.

Across India, there are a several slimming centres that promise you quick weight loss/inch loss through ‘pain-free and safe’ liposuction. But not all of them actually explain the procedure and the downfall of undergoing such cosmetic surgeries.

Here’s the truth!

Human beings are all genetically predisposed to a certain body shape and type, and a procedure like liposuction that offers a magic solution to remove stubborn fat from different areas of the body, essentially fights against what you’ve been given genetically. Mind you, this may not be ideal at all.

Like any other surgical procedure, liposuction has its own risks, the most serious being death. A typical liposuction procedure involves inserting a long tube under the skin, where it is moved vigorously to break down the stubborn fat deposits that are eventually sucked out of the body. And this sensation of a cannula forcefully moving under your skin can be extremely uncomfortable. Hence, most people opt for a risky general anaesthetic.

Apart from this, certain fluids are injected in the areas to help break down the fat. If you thought they were not harmful then here’s an eye opener: Believe it or not, too much of this liquid can literally drown your heart. Most people also develop infections due to this fluid and also risk the blockage of arteries. Also, there is a possibility of the excess liquid oozing out of the area post-surgery.

Another major downfall of liposuction is poor outcomes. Like any other cosmetic surgery, a liposuction too can go wrong, leaving behind bumpy appearances. This is something most women would definitely not want.

Though there are thousands who undergo the procedure of liposuction in India and across the world, there is really no documented evidence to show its long-term impact. Logically, weight loss is a combined effort of the mind and body and adopting such short-cuts will only ruin an individual’s health.

For all those who are looking to lose weight, focusing on eating right and maintaining a regular exercise routine will do wonders. It may take a while before you slip into your perfect little black dress, but its most definitely better than losing your life itself!
