AIB: Out of the roast and into the fire

Anyone who says that Bollywood stars cannot laugh at themselves clearly missed the memo on the 2015 AIB Roast.

Visuals of the recent event showed Arjun Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Karan Johar, and even a certain Ms. Padukone, who clearly stepped down from her moral high ground following Cleavage-gate, in peals of laughter while a bunch of young stand-up comedians had a go at them.

Others including Anurag Kashyap, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, and Sanjay Kapoor took it in the chin in good spirits.

But not everyone was amused.

Was the AIB Roast really funny or did they cross the line with uncalled for innuendo?

Social media is abuzz with those who were ready to toast or roast the young comedians. Some even called it a national shame. Here’s what a few of them had to say.

We stand by AIB Knockout

AIB National Shame

But what is controversy without Big Brother stepping in?

The Maharashtra government has also jumped on the bandwagon. First, it pledged an inquiry to determine if AIB employed obscene content. After initially calling such vulgarity ‘a crime’ Maharashtra’s minister for cultural affairs Vinod Tawde backtracked saying the government’s probe would be limited to ascertaining if the event had necessary clearances…

…but wait…there’s more.

A Censor Board member’s double standards have also come to light. Ashoke Pandit’s recent tweet over the entire controversy has also created quite a stir.

He said:

Errr… perhaps in future, the Central Board Film Certification will introspect a little before flying off the handle each time they hear a *bleep*.

Will the fire be doused soon? Only time will tell.

For now the nation struggles to ascertain if AIB was All India Bakwaas or All India Brilliance.
