The word anti-national now has a destination! When you type the word ‘anti-national’ in Google Maps’ search tab, it directs you to Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU)!

Google Maps is known to throw up several bogus results, but this one is simply embarrassing! Words like anti-national, leftist and sedition will directly take you to JNU.

Jawharlal Nehru University (JNU) was most recently dragged into spotlight after its students union’s president Kanhaiya Kumar and company were charged with sedition and criminal conspiracy.

Several such incidents of Google providing botched up results maybe attributed to the phoney edits suggested by users via the company’s crowdsourced map-making tool. That doesn’t seem to be the case with this incident.

One of the reasons maybe the frequent use of terms like ‘anti-national’ and ‘leftist’ in the reviews section of JNU’s location on Google Maps—this coupled with the numerous news stories on the incident that may have carried these key words.

Similarly, Map Maker users had suggested the use of search terms such as ‘anti-national’, ‘jihadi university’ and ‘psychiatric hospital’. However, these requests are still listed as ‘pending’.

Google had temporarily made Map Maker unavailable in May, 2015, to prevent fake edits, after an image of the android mascot urinating on Apple’s logo went viral.
