Army veteran bursts out into tears in Arnab Goswami’s Newshour debate

Army veteran General G D Bakshi broke down into tears on Arnab Goswami’s Newshour debate on Thursday while discussing whether national flags should be hoisted in all central universities in the nation.

Dramatic events followed in the television show as panelists – Imankalyan Lahiri, writer Saira Shah Halim and supreme court lawyer Shabnam Lone opposed to the view of hoisting national flag in central universities.

At the backdrop of controversies in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus in Delhi, union ministry of HRD on Thursday decided to hoist the tri-color national flag in all central universities. However, panelists who opposed move held that it would tantamount to enforcement of nationalism into the mind of students and called it ‘Extreme nationalism’.

However, general Bakshi who retorted back by recalling the sacrifices of Indian soldiers in the frontier regions, bursted out into tears. An appalled general asked how a certain section of Indians could ignore the martyrdom of soldiers who laid down their for ensuring peace and security in the country.

“I am appalled that we soldiers of the country are neglected, our efforts are disregarded,” said general Bakshi on the show.

Anyhow, union minister for HRD Smriti Irani was quick to address the concern of the army veteran. Smriti Irani addressed the debate over telephone and consoled the general.

“It is a tragedy of my nation that I see tears in the eyes of a brave soldier like him,” she said.
