Nirbhaya’s case awakened the leaders from their slumber, but will the reforms ever make an impact? Atrocities against women continue to rock the nation even as the world celebrated International Women’s Day on Tuesday.

In a shameful and horrendous act, a 16-year-old girl from Tigri (a village in Greater Noida west) was brutally raped and then set ablaze. She battled for life at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi suffering 95 percent burns and succumbed to her injuries during the wee hours of Tuesday.

Reportedly, the accused—an 18-year-old who was arrested—was her neighbour and had befriended her. According to the police, they met at the rooftop of the girl’s house on Monday, where she was raped and later set ablaze.

In a shocking revelation, according to National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 36,735 incidents of rape were reported just in the year 2014—implying that four women were raped every hour.
