Avatar’s four sequels and other long-awaited sequels

Fans of Avatar have a reason to celebrate! James Cameron has just announced four sequels to one of the highest-grossing films of all time. Keeping his promise to give fans the biggest show on earth and a truly exquisite cinematic experience, Cameron announced that he will make not three but four sequels to the 2009 film which earned $2.8 billion worldwide.

Cameron aims to return to Pandora by Christmas 2018, followed by the third, fourth and fifth installments in 2020, 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Here’s a look at a list of the long-awaited sequels (either released or unreleased) to the some of the biggest films in Hollywood.

1. Independence Day: Resurgence

Independence Day (1996) set several new box office records. The sequel is all set to hit the theatre 20 years later in June, 2016! Actor Jeff Goldblum promises that it will be bigger and better than the first film. Gear up, fans! Here come the extraterrestrials!

2. Beverly Hills Cop IV

The first three films of the Beverly Hills Cop series (released in 1984, 1987 and 1994 respectively) grossed almost $800 million worldwide. Eddie Murphy will return as Agent Foley in the fourth installment. Although the production house has withdrawn its March (2016) release, fans are hoping to catch the film early next year.

3. Alice Through the Looking Glass

Six years after Johnny Depp impressed everyone as Mad Hatter, he will be seen donning the crazy hat and greasepaint once again as Alice returns to Wonderland in May, 2016.

4. Finding Dory

The lovable blue fish will reunite with friends 13 years after the first animated film Finding Nemo (2003) was released. The long-awaited sequel will be released in June, 2016.

5. Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them

Potterheads have been waiting to return to the world of magic—the last Harry Potter film was released in 2011. The film (which is prequel to the Harry Potter film series) will feature Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne as magician Newt Scamander. The film is slated for release in November, 2016.

6. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

In a bid to reboot the popular film franchise, the fifth installment of of the Pirates of the Caribbean will be released in May, 2017. Johnny Depp will return to play the crazy pirate Captain Jack Sparrow!

7. The Incredibles 2

15 years after they saved the world, the family of undercover superheroes will return to the big screen in June, 2019.

8. Toy Story 4

Woody and Buzz disappeared after the third installment of Toy Story which was released in 2010. Fans, don’t worry! The toys will go on another adventure in the fourth installment slated for release in June, 2018.

9. Mad Max: Fury Road

The last film from the action series was Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985). Tom Hardy replaced Mel Gibson in the fourth installment released in 2015—it won six of the ten Academy Awards that it was nominated for.

10. Monsters Inc.

It took filmmakers 12 years to follow-up their hit 2001 film. The monsters returned in 2013 in the sequel Monsters University.
