Believe it or not this penguin is a Brigadier in Norway!

Guess who inspected the guard of honor of His Majesty the King of Norway’s Guard? It was a Penguin. And not a normal penguin. He is a decorated and high ranking military official!

Sir Nils Olav, the resident King penguin of Edinburgh Zoo was paid a visit by His Majesty King of Norway’s Guard on last Monday. On the occasion, Olav, who was already a knight, was bestowed with the title of Brigadier.

Thus “Brigadier Sir Nils Olav” is the most famous penguin in the world.

The coveted title was bestowed in a special ceremony which was attended by 50 uniformed soldiers of  His Majesty the King of Norway’s Guard.

‘Brigadier Sir’ walked up the penguins aisle inspecting the soldiers of the guard.

The penguin who received Knighthood in 2008 and was made the mascot of His Majesty King of Norway’s Guard. According to Edinburgh Zoo, Nils Olav’s story goes back as far as 1972, when a king penguin at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo was named after two people: Major Nils Egelien, who organised his adoption by RZSS Edinburgh Zoo in 1972, and the then-King of Norway, King Olav.

The connection between penguins and the zoo dates back as early as 1914 when a Norwegian family presented king penguins to the zoo authorities.
