Pulling dangerous stunts on roads and putting up pictures of them on social media can now land you in prison. Bengaluru police are now tracking social media for people who are breaking traffic rules.

21-year-old Mohammed Juber was arrested Sep 17 after the police found pictures of him performing dangerous stunts on his social media profile. He was charged under various sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

“We noticed the photos that he (Juber) had put on his profile and then tracked him down. Those involved in such stunts keep changing their vehicles and it is usually difficult to track them down. We have to try new ways of keeping them in check,” senior police officer Abhishek Goyal told NDTV.

Police are now trying to track down Juber’ associates who are believed to be a part a larger stunt group in the city.

According to a report by state government, 180 people lost their lives due to performing stunts on roads. The police have now decided to probe social media to track down and stop such dangerous and illegal activities.

Earlier this month a 18-year-old girl by the name of Shiny Kiran lost her life due to a stunt gone wrong. She was riding pillion when her friend tried to pull off a wheeling. The girl lost her balance and died when a truck ran over her.

The Bengaluru Police have become very active on all forms of social media, constantly sending information for the benefit of the city’s residents. They also monitor social media 24×7 and readily respond to queries and complaints.

“Whenever we get information we will act on it. We generally keep a close eye on social media and that has helped,” said Goyal.
