The former Miss Universe pageant Gul Panag unsuccessfully contested the 2014 Lok Sabha elections for Aam Aadmi Party. Smriti Irani, the incumbent HRD minister, was a television actress before plunging into politics.

More recently, BJP has given yet another actress a break in politics—Angoorlata Deka.

Assamese actor Deka (30) is famous for portraying Benazir Bhutto in plays for the Assamese mobile theatre in 2008 and for her roles in films namely Junda Iman Gunda (2007), Bakor Putek (2012) and Surjasta (2013).

Deka belonged to a very small village in the north-eastern state. She found it hard to convince her parents about her passion for acting, but Assamese theatre legend Seema Biswas helped her get their approval.

Great things awaited her in politics. She stormed to power in Assam after defeating the veteran politician and Congress leader Gautam Bora from the Batadroba constituency.
