Acclaimed writer-lyricist Javed Akhtar recently bid farewell to the upper house after six years. He will retire from the Rajya Sabha later this year. In his speech, Javed shared experiences from his time there and spoke extensively on issues of democracy, secularism and youth power.

“Democracy and secularism, constitution and youth power, these are advantages India enjoys and they should not be frittered away,” Javed said, addressing the ongoing debate on intolerance. He also took a dig at the AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi who made headlines after he said he wouldn’t chant ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ even at knifepoint. Javed said, “There is one man who thinks he is a national leader, but in reality he is only a leader in an area in the city of Hyderabad, in one of India’s states.” He continued, “The constitution also does not ask him to wear a sherwani and a cap. I condemn his statement on all fronts.”

Javed chanted ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ a number of times in his speech. The powerful speech garnered applause and appreciation from a number of people, especially from his Bollywood fraternity.

Was wondering why @Javedakhtarjadu Saab was trending. Just saw his magnificent speech in RS. Great thinker, writer, orator #BharatMataKiJai
