Chennai pet owners may no longer need to struggle to find public transport to visit the vet with their pets. Animal activists Kamal Banger and Jayshree Ramesh’s brain child Wagging Tails will now provide cab services for people with pets.

“My friend couldn’t find a vehicle to take her ailing dog to a hospital. She lives in Semmancherry and by the time we reached and took the dog to the vet, it died. That’s when we decided to launch this service,” Ms. Jayashree told The Hindu

The initiative was kicked off on Sunday across Chennai using two cabs. The travel fee would depend on the distance between the locations and the size of the pets.

“I drive the small car myself, or ask my husband to help out,” said Jayashree. “We are looking for drivers as most of the calls that we get are from far away places like Thiruverkadu,” she added.

The first call was for a kitten whose owner wanted to visit the vet vaccination but couldn’t find a vehicle.

“It is sad that animals suffer so much silently, and do not get timely help. Many do not allow injured pets inside their vehicles,” said Kamal.

The initiative, founded in 2014, is also a part of a larger group called Hearty Paws. The all-women group consists of 12 animal rights activists who help animals in distress and promote/encourage animal adoption.

The group, however, is yet to be recognized as an NGO.
