Cardboard desks doubled up as suitcases changing lives of rural students
Schools in rural areas generally lack the basic amenities such as desks and school bags. As a consequence, children are subjected to bad posture, poor handwriting and disadvantaged eyesight. Aarambh, a Mumbai-based NGO, recognized the grey area and came up with a brilliant initiative as a solution.
The contraption termed ‘Help Desk’ is made from recycled cardboard. The foldable desk also doubles up as a suitcase to carry books. Aarambh donated these tables to rural schools in Maharashtra.
The cost of manufacturing each Help Desk is Rs 10. The NGO’s effort has only solved a part of the problem. Children in rural schools still sit on dust ridden floors and use extremely unsanitary toilets. Nonetheless, Aarambh’s initiative is valuable and will perhaps prove to be a launch pad for better things to come.
