In case you aren’t aware, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is quite strict about the plastic ban! You will now be fined Rs 500 if you’re caught carrying a plastic bag! And repeat offence can escalate this fine up to Rs 1000. Bag manufacturers will be slapped with a fine of up to Rs 5 lakhs.

27 manufacturer-licences out of the 93 industries working in the outskirts of Bengaluru city have already been revoked.

Lakshman, chairman of KSPCB said, “There are more than 600 plastic manufacturers and to cancel their licenses there are various procedures and a committee to look into it. But there are only 93 plastic carry bag manufacturers and out of which 27 licenses have been cancelled.”

Bengaluru is infamous for producing 4,000 metric tons of solid waste per day, out of which 350 to 400 metric tons is plastic waste.

According to Prasad, it would be the respective zonal officials’ responsibility to completely eradicate the use of plastic in the city.

But what alternative has BBMP given to plastic? One does have the right to question the practicality of the rule!
