Hollywood actress Pamela Anderson has added another feather to her charity cap. In a letter to the Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, the 47-year-old Baywatch beauty has appealed to stop using elephants at the Thrissur Pooram festival.

The festival will be celebrated at the Thekkinkadu Maidanam (open place) in Thrissur, Kerala on Wednesday (April 29).

In the letter, Pamela has gone the extra length and offered to pay for 30 faux elephants made of bamboo and papier mache, of the hundreds to be used at the celebration.

Pamela strongly rebukes the use of these elephants without registering them under the Animal Welfare Board of India. The PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) ambassador has also expressed her concern over the deaths in Kerala due to elephants going berserk and has reminded Oommen Chandy of the growing public dissent towards elephant captivity.

The actress-turned-activist believes that tourists visiting God’s Own Country will be saddened to see such appalling treatment towards animals.

Despite Pamela Anderson’s strong letter, the forest officials remained firm on their festival plans, claiming it is a tradition that cannot be tampered with.

The rampant attack by elephants on innocent lives back in 2008 and 2012 in Kerala remains fresh in people’s mind and Pamela Anderson’s voice has given this issue an international wake-up call.

Is the chief minister taking note?
