Dulquer Shocker: Son beats father to win best actor award

There weren’t many upsets and surprises at the Academy Awards this year. But the Kerala State Film Awards filled this void with a number of them!

Parvathy bagging the best actress award was a given. But the biggest surprise of the day was when Dulquer Salmaan grabbed the best actor award for his role in ‘Charlie’. Dulquer was far behind in predictions—Mammootty (his father), Prithviraj and Jayasurya were considered favourites for the award.

Charlie won the most number of awards at the Kerala State Film Awards. The director of the film too wasn’t left behind—Martin Prakkat was awarded the best director.

The jury for the past few years is known to have chosen the young actors over the veteran actors. Nivin Pauly beat Mammootty in the race for the award last year, and Fahad Fasil won the award in 2014.

Dulquer Salmaan, who made his debut in 2012, has since become a youth icon in Kerala after his notable performances in ‘Ustad Hotel’ and ‘ABCD’.
