Chennai to install 183 new public e-toilets that can clean themselves, in a move to get back to the top of Swachh Survekshan’s list of cleanest cities.

The recently released Swachh Survekshan ranking did not see Chennai in a favourable position—certainly not in the top 15.

These portable toilets installed in different parts of the city are unmanned and completely automatic. The toilet cleans its floor after usage, each time, making it highly hygienic and stench free.

“We want even people who travel by car to stop and use these toilets. That’s the hygiene we are aiming at, ” NDTV quoted A S Murugan, Executive Engineer of Chennai Corporation.

Chennai’s smart toilets can be located using an app. The users can also send feedback and pictures that will be monitored by an independent agency. Some toilets also come with incinerators that can dispose sanitary napkins.

This facility, however, comes at a cost. Each toilet costs around INR 5,00,000 and an extra INR 5000 may have to be spent every month on the maintenance.

“It’s a GPRS based system. Authorities can also monitor its working, the flush count and ensure hygiene remotely,” Anwar Sadath, CEO of Eram Scientific, told NDTV.

Chennai residents seem happy about this initiative. This facility could finally be the answer to the city’s struggle against open urination and defecation.
