Earthquake aftermath: How you can help Nepal in its time of need

As Nepal lies devastated by the earthquake, it’s a time for giving. There are many ways in which you can reach out, donating in cash or kind:

If you want to give supplies:

Food: Scarcity of food is one of the first fallouts of natural disasters such as this one. When sending food to the affected region remember that high-calorie foods like energy biscuits and granola bars are useful. Also convenient to carry and distribute are dried foods, canned foods and instant noodles.

Water: Water shortages are already being felt. Sachets are easier to transport and distribute. Water purification tablets are another vital need for earthquake-affected areas.

Medical supplies: Antibiotics, pain-killers and multi-vitamin tablets will all come in handy when dealing with the medical emergencies a natural calamity such as this one causes.

Protection from the elements: From light-weight blankets to tents and raincoats, there’ll be a need for materials and equipment that can keep those in earthquake areas safe and warm.

Sanitary products: Sanitizers, disinfectant, tampons, diapers, gloves will all be much needed.

Where to drop supplies:

You can drop supplies of well-packaged non-perishable food like biscuits and energy bars, bottled  drinking water, blankets, hygiene products like soap and disinfectant, tents and tarpaulin at Fabindia stores in Mumbai, Delhi & NCR, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur and Kochi.

What corporate can do:

Several companies have come forward to donate machinery such as tractors and other vital supplies to the earthquake-hit region. You can also think of giving schemes such as donating a day’s salary to the cause.

Volunteer:

You can consider helping the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), which is engaged in tracing disaster relief routes. HOT is a web-based oufit applies principles of open source and open data sharing for humanitarian purposes. HOT is still mapping roads into remote mountainous regions which will be critical for ground-based rescue and relief efforts work to navigate the rugged terrain.
