One Direction fans across the globe woke up to the ‘devastating’ news that one of the 5-member boy band was quitting to lead the life of a ‘normal 22 year old’. Zayn Malik’s departure caused the kind of mass hysteria with #AlwaysInOurHeartsZaynMalik, and the more disturbing #cut4Zayn trending on Twitter with more than 4,600 tweets a minute and some posting pictures of slashed arms while encouraging other fans to do the same.

Zayn Malik was in the news recently when he was spotted holding hands with a blonde girl outside a nightclub in Thailand. The singer faced some backlash from fans who said he was cheating on his fiancée Perrie Edwards, also a pop star in her own right with girl band Little Mix. Malik vehemently denied the claims but the incident seemed to have taken its toll on the singer, who it was said was getting weary of life in the limelight.
Ironically, his mother says he never wanted to attend the audition that eventually catapulted him to international stardom as a 17 year old.
