As Amma Turns 68, TN Senior Citizens Enjoy Free Bus Rides

The AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu has introduced a free bus pass scheme for senior citizens as part of the Chief Minister– Jayalalithaa’s — birthday celebrations.

With effect from February 24, ie on Amma’s birthday, this scheme will let a senior citizen avail free bus pass for up to 10 bus rides a month.

The scheme will be initially available under the Chennai Corporation, where seniors can have free rides in any non-air conditioned Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses.

The MTC, with over 4,000 buses running in about 600 different routes, is a major lifeline of the city’s public transport system serving almost 55 lakh passengers on a daily basis.

With the introduction of the scheme, Jayalalithaa claims to have kept all promises given by her and her party AIADMK before 2011 state elections.
