Google essays a new ‘Alphabet’! 10 must-know facts about its Chennai-born CEO Sundar Pichai

Chennai born Sundar Pichai was named the new CEO of the world’s largest browser and software giant, Google on Monday, August 10, 2015.

Sundar has come a big way from being a middle class boy of Tamil Nadu to one of the many Indians leading world companies. So here are a few things about Google’s new head and what made him a leader.

1. Sundar did his schooling at Chennai at PSBB and VanaVani and led the cricket team there, leading to victories in the Tamil Nadu regional cricket tournament. Guessing, this is where the ambition to win at whatever is taken up began.

2. He moved on to get a bachelors in Metallurgical Engineering, at IIT Kharagpur. He then did his M.S at the prestigious Stanford University, and went on to secure an MBA at the world renowned Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

3. He was declared as a Siebal scholar, which is a position given to talented students, competing from 27 schools of business, bioengineering, computer science and energy science from many countries around the world.

4. Sundar had a stint at McKinsey & Company as product engineer before he joined Google 11 years ago.

5. Sundar has been groomed by Google chief and now ex-CEO, Larry Page.

6. Sundar as CEO, will lead a new corporate structure started by Google called Alphabet, which will also go under the name of Google and will handle many sectors including life sciences, business, and product management. When Alphabet is fully equipped, Google will be taken over by Alphabet.

7. Before becoming CEO, Sundar was mostly known for being a part of the team that launched Google Chrome in 2008, a web browser used by millions across the world.

8. Google chief and mentor Larry Page, praised the new CEO saying, “I feel very fortunate to have someone as talented as he is to run the slightly slimmed down Google and this frees up time for me to continue to scale our aspirations.”

9. Sundar Pichai aims at bringing life enhancing technology to every segment of society, without leaving anyone behind and sees software as a means to reach every single individual.

10. Sundar Pichai will join an already enviable and elite list of Indians who lead world companies like Satya Nadella (Microsoft), Indira Nooyi (Pepsi), Shantanu Narayen (Adobe), Ajay Banga (MasterCard) and many more.
