Australian slang is almost a language of its own. One word in particular features much more than the others — mate!

Everybody down under is your “mate“. And every properly formulated Aussie sentence contains at least one “mate“. What’s more, Aussies have evolved this expression over the years to cover a range of emotions and situations. Here are some of them.

1. “I haven’t seen you in bloody ages!”

2. “I’m addressing you right now, but for the life of me I have no idea what your name is…”

3. “This is actually seriously bad news and I have nothing else to say.”

4. “You are talking to my chick and I’m not happy about it. But, following that thought, you are also good looking, pretty smooth and of fairly large stature. So I’m a little put off.”

5. You dropped a fresh golden fifty note on the ground, and I would like to get your attention to return it before I change my mind.

6. “How good was that fleeting yet glorious moment of sporting prowess!”

7.  “A geez! I’m afraid not. I really can’t.”

8. “Liar!”

9. “I am currently under the influence of a truly majestic feeling based on this current experience, and thus have nothing else to say.”

10. “You deserve some sizzling credit for that top work.”

11. “Bravo on the new female acquisition – but what on Earth did YOU say to gather the lasting affection of a lass that gorgeous?”

12. “You are thinking that we will catch up soon, but I am thinking the opposite of that.”

13. “I’m shagged! Honestly!”

14. “You are a dog or a small baby, therefore I’m changing my tone to one which you might understand.”

15. “Straight-up, you’re a D#@k-head.”

16. “Thank you. I am extremely appreciative of your assistance.”

17. “That opinion of yours is grossly incorrect.”

18. “Although I managed to get a handful of ales this far through the bar with much aplomb, I have spilled some on your back and so wish to apologise.”
