India’s first gay matrimonial ad is simple and sweet. But it’s the ‘conventional’ ones that will shock you
On May 19, the Mid-Day published the country’s first-ever gay matrimonial ad. Padma Iyer, a ‘ good Tamil homemaker’ was looking for a groom for her son, Harish, a very vocal gay activist. Her requirements were fairly conventional. His ideal match was someone who was well-placed, vegetarian and would love her son’s cats. But even the progressive Mrs. Iyer, who mentioned that caste was no bar, could not help but sneak in her preference for an Iyer boy.
But before Mid Day editor Sachin Kalbaug showed his unequivocal support by placing the ad in his paper, Iyer and his mother were rejected by the Times of India, DNA, and Hindustan Times, who were hesitant to use the ad on legal grounds.
However, it seems that more outrageous demands from people searching for partners are acceptable. Anybody who has ever read the classified pages would surely have stumbled upon the humorous and amusing lines that people place to find a ‘suitable’ spouse.
So moving from the conventional “fair” and “well-settled” requirements, we have complied a few conventional matrimonial ads that will tickle your funny bone.
1. This guy maybe young at heart, but a 49 year old youth!? Be realistic.
