A 11-member parliamentary ethics committee has sought Rahul’s response to “complaint of ethical misconduct given by Subramanian Swamy and forwarded by Mahesh Giri”.  Subramanian Swamy had alleged earlier in November that Rahul had declared himself a British citizen in UK’s tax return document in 2005 and 2006 so as to float a company called Backops Limited.

The office of British home ministry refused to divulge details on Rahul’s alleged citizenship. According to a public statement granted under Freedom of Information (FoI) Act, the British home office in London has ‘neither confirmed nor denied’ the information that was sought about the scion of the Gandhi family in its registries. The British home office in the public document has further stated that revealing the information will “contravene the Data Protection principles in Schedule 1 of Data protection Act 1998”.

In January 2016, east Delhi MP Mahesh Girri’s complaint that raised questions about Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship was forwarded to the ethics committee by the Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan. ‘Appropriate inquiry’ into the matter was sought after Subramanian Swamy alleged him of holding dual citizenship.
