ISRO to put IIT-B’s satellite – ‘Pratham’ in orbit, launch due in September

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is all set to launch a satellite developed by the Indian institute of Technology in Bombay.

The satellite named as ‘Pratham’ will lift-off from the Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota in September. Pratham will be ferried to orbit by the space agency’s four stage Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).

According to a report in The Times of India, the IIT’s satellite would be mounted to ISRO’s main satellite ScatSat. Pratham is presently housed in the clean room facility of ISRO in Bengaluru.

“Only the exact launch date has to be finalized,” Ratnesh Mishra – Pratham project manager and a final year aerospace student in IIT-B – was quoted by TOI.

Pratham orbiting at an altitude of 720 km would only have a short four month mission span. The mission of the satellite will be the measurement of “electron count” which is expected to – aid scientific studies, correction of errors for GPS and tsunami warning.

Total cost of the project is Rs 1.5 crore.
