In order to teach a young Japanese boy a lesson, his parents abandoned him in the wilderness to fend for himself. But little had they expected their child to go missing. As the search for the child entered the fifth day on Wednesday, the parents admitted that what they did was ‘an unforgivable thing’.

Japan’s military today joined hundreds of police and volunteers in the hunt for seven-year-old Yamato Tanooka who was abandoned in a dense forest on Saturday afternoon.

Tanooka’s parents, who had initially told the police that the child had strayed away while they collected plants in the forest, later confessed that the boy went missing after they tried to discipline him by abandoning him.

“We have done an unforgivable thing to our child and we have caused a lot of trouble for everyone. I just hope he is safe,” Daily Mail quoted Tanooka’s father.

Seventy-five members of the Japanese Self-Defence Forces have joined 200 police officials and civilians clearing their way through the thick vegetation in the mountainous forest on Hokkaido island.

Reportedly, a local hunter’s help too was sought after fresh bear tracks were found in the area where he had vanished.

Despite all the efforts, there still is no sign of the boy. It is also speculated that the boy might not have survived Tuesday’s heavy rains.
