In a Vogue exclusive tête-à-tête with the Begum of Bollywood, she reveals everything you need to know about her beauty, fashion and lifestyle choices:

From vogue.in

High street or high glam: High street

Favourite red carpet look: I love the sari but unfortunately nobody does it on the red carpet.

Smoky eyes or red lips: Smoky eyes

How do you spend your day off: Watching TV all day long

Your midnight cheat snack: Fruits, though of course I would like to have chocolates. Also, ice cream is always there in the fridge.

A drink you love: I am a tea drinker—so regular tea without sugar.

Favourite fragrance: Jo Malone Orange Blossom

Craving right now: A cocktail

Favourite spa massage: Thai massages are amazing. I like basic, light, de-stress massages, nothing too heavy.

Favourite shopping stop in Thailand: I think Siam Paragon is just amazing. It has food and everything else.

Your style in two words: Casual-chic—I’m a jeans, T-shirt and boots person.

Your life’s theme song:Sad Lisa’ by Yusuf Islam a.k.a Cat Stevens

Favourite fashion destination: Paris

Your travel essentials: My toiletries—my shampoo and other hair products from Bumble and Bumble and my Jo Malone shower gel.

Favourite drink: Water and red wine

A music festival you want to attend: Montreux Jazz Festival

A musician you are embarrassed to have on your playlist: Britney Spears, back in the day. And Justin Bieber.

The song on your mind right now: ‘Summertime Sadness’ by Lana Del Rey

Your music alter ego: Madonna

Your current favourite artist: Adele

Art that draws you in: I am drawn to pretty, summery hues like greens and blues, and I also like still art.

Your most treasured art piece: Manu Parekh’s Banaras series that my mom gifted me for my wedding.

Your first experience with make-up: I think I have always liked make-up, I am a typical girly girl. Wearing mom’s lipsticks, grandmom’s mascara, being in front of the dressers—that’s how I have always been—like a baby born to be in front of the mirror (and the camera).

You can’t leave the house without: My Lakmé Iconic Kajal, Vaseline and blush.

The beauty product that does it all for you: Kajal

On the red carpet, you never tire of: Kohl eyes—I love it, for me it’s always that. Everyone has their go-to look, and that’s mine.

A make-up look that you will never try: Well, I think I have tried everything! I don’t think there can be anything crazier than the two coloured lip look I had for Lakmé’s campaign—an orange on the upper lip and a pink at the bottom.

Your fitness routine: I shuffle between weight training and yoga in the morning. And I don’t have a personal celebrity trainer.

You’ve been doing yoga for years, tell us about that: Yoga is a part of my soul, a part of me. I feel the inverted postures help the face a lot, and any kind of yogic breathing will help the inner being, automatically affecting the skin. I have been practising yoga for over 10 years and it feels amazing. While I basically do Ashtanga, I’ve tried all its different forms but I can tell you one thing, even a simple surya namaskar can help immensely.

Your hair care routine: I make sure I oil my hair often.

A home remedy you swear by: My family (especially my sister) swears by a mix of almond oil and yoghurt applied to the face for a good 30 minutes. We usually do this on a lazy Sunday at home.

One thing you will never take out from your diet: French fries!

How do you start your day?
With a wholesome fruit and a big glass of water—not warm or hot—just room temperature water.

What’s your skincare routine?
I don’t believe in using a lot of products. Having said that, I do have a basic routine. My skin tends to be on the drier side, so I always have my Lakmé Perfect Radiance Light Crème handy. I use a night cream before I go to bed which helps repair my skin and I apply a hydrating mask once a week. When it is very hot, I spritz my face with La Prairie Soothing After Sun Mist. I also believe what you put in your body is as important as what you put on it. I drink at least three litres of water everyday. No matter where I am, hydration is my mainstay.

Do you follow a specific diet?
I feel when you’re satiated, you feel happy and it shows on your skin. When people don’t eat for different reasons and go on strict diets, they tend to binge eat and that’s when your skin breaks out. I believe that you should stick to three basic meals, if not four—wholesome healthy food that will make you happy.

What are your top three unbreakable skin commandments?
1. Never sleep with make-up on.
2. Drink at least three litres of water every day.
3. No matter what part of the world you’re in, keep your moisturiser handy.

What’s your detox remedy?
Cabbage, beetroot and carrots

An age-old remedy for breakouts?
Honestly, I just let it breathe, cut out on oily food and let nature take its course. But sometimes, even a good toothpaste dabbed on the affected area works!

A skincare home remedy you and your family swear by?
Almond oil—on a lazy day at home we just soak ourselves up in it! A combination of that and yoghurt is great for the face too, if you have dry skin.

Who’s your skin role model?
My mom—she has amazing skin—red and white and pink. My mother has always looked after her skin, she’s always creaming and toning and really maintains her skin. I don’t follow her routine, but I’ve always looked up to her because I don’t have the patience to do as much as she does.

What’s the secret to your glow?
There are good days and there are bad days, but when you’re happy, you glow. And that’s really it—it’s about how you feel—your state of mind plays a major role.

What’s your advice to women?
Stay happy, let your inner personality shine, sleep well and always have happy thoughts.

Okay! So, what did we learn? She is everything you are and much more. Keep it simple girls!
