Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah has requested the West Bengal government to investigate the issue of unfair treatment of Kahmiri students. Reportedly, Kolkata police had asked all the city-based institutions to provide details of their Kashmiri students.

Omar took to Twitter to get the West Bengal chief minister’s attention.

Indian Express reports claimed that the police had sent notices to colleges during the last week of February, amidst protests that supported the JNU students who were charged for allegedly shouting “anti-national” slogans.

The police note, reproduced by the Indian Express, was addressed to the principal of the college. It read: Please let me know that students, whose residential addresses is under the State of Jammu & Kashmir, studies in your Institution for onwards transmission to the Ministry of Home Affairs, North Block, New Delhi, Govt. of India.

According to the newspaper, a senior police official said that the request was forwarded by central intelligence agencies.

“It’s an attempt to create dossiers on J&K students so that we can monitor their activities,” a top police officer told the Indian Express. “This is really something new we are doing for the first time,” he added.
