Madurai’s magnificent festival: One of India’s finest spectacles
Every April-May, as the summer sun beats down on Madurai, the ancient town comes alive with a centuries-old festival — the Chithirai Thiruvizha. The beautiful fish-eyed goddess, Meenakshi, weds Sundareswar, and the city celebrates as if it were a family wedding. Then Kallazhagar, a Vishnu avatar, comes visiting to participate in the festivities and there’s more revelry.
