The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) stadium in Bengaluru, better known as the Chinnaswamy stadium, is going green!

The stadium is the first in India, and probably the world’s first, to install solar power panels on its rooftop, which will take care of at least 40 percent of the stadium’s electricity requirement.

KSCA has installed a 400 KW rooftop solar power plant at M Chinnaswamy stadium… We appointed RenXSol Ecotech as solar consultants to KSCA for design, engineering and project management activity for this challenging project,” KSCA Secretary Brijesh Patel told PTI.

The plant was inaugurated on April 16 by Karnataka Energy Minister D K Shivakumar, who said the state will encourage the construction of extra floors as an incentive for people to install solar power panels on the rooftops of their houses.

Patel said that the plant is designed to generate 5.90 lakh units per year, equivalent to powering 200 AEH (All Electric Homes) households and will save about 600 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.

The stadium will be saving Rs.40-50 lakh annually on electricity bills by using solar energy for their power needs. It will also supply to the state grid on days when matches are not played and have surplus solar power to spare,” KSCA spokesman Vinay Mrutyunjaya told Dainik Jagran.

Way to go, KSCA! Bangalore is proud of you!
