A monster fire that broke out early this morning completely destroyed the National Museum of Natural History in central Delhi.

The fire which initially broke out at about 1.45 a. m. on the sixth floor of the museum, located in the FICCI Building in Mandi House, quickly spread to the remaining floors.

Two other buildings in the same complex—the FICCI Auditorium and FICCI Headquarters haven’t been affected.

NDTV reported that as many as 35 fire engines were rushed to the site soon after the fire broke out. It was brought under control only by 5 a. m. and doused completely by 7 a. m.

Fortunately, not too many people were present inside the building which was being renovated. The building was evacuated by the time fire officials arrived.

According to NDTV, six fire officials were injured by the fire. They were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Two of injured are in critical condition.

A senior fire officer told NDTV that the building’s fire safety mechanisms weren’t functional.  “That is why it took us so long to douse the fire. The cooling off process is still on,” he added.
