While some managed to catch a good sum like Harichandra Somar, a Colaba resident, who grabbed 5-thousand rupee notes before they floated away, some weren’t as lucky. Santhosh Pawar a hawker couldn’t get his hands on more than one, by when the Police arrived at the spot and started shooing people away.

They  took the ones who managed to pick notes and recorded their statements on what they had to say about the incident. There are two rumours doing the rounds.

Santhosh Pawar said he heard from somebody that ‘a foreigner threw the money in the waters and dared people to go after them’ and some others just said  that a ‘wealthy person’ threw a lot of money in the waters due to being chased by thugs at the Gateway. The identity of the person and the event that led this both remain a mystery.

The media was abuzz with reports on the incident. Here’s a look at some of their tweets:

The notes were first found on Tuesday (August 11, 2015) by swimmers, fishermen and hawkers, and in the belief that Lakhs were thrown, many continued to look around to find some luck.

But now the police are around controlling the situation and stopping the people from risking their lives by jumping into the waters.

Well, they say money doesn’t grow on trees, but may be we just got the source wrong!!!
