An effective communication strategy that brought about behavioral change in people and measures to engage citizens in cleanliness drive were the two main factors that helped Mysuru retain the title for a second consecutive year.

While Mysuru topped the list with 1,749 marks, Dhanbad in Jharkhand, which scored 464, came last.

Out of the 73 cities that were chosen for the survey, cities from south and west fared better than of eastern and northern cities.

Apart from Mysuru, others who retained their top spots are Tiruchirappalli at third position, Pimpri Chinchwadat at ninth position and Ludhiana at 34th position.

While Navi Mumbai, Chennai, Pune and Nashik have fallen out of the top 10 in 2016; Visakhapatnam, Surat, Rajkot and Gangtok have claimed their positions in the top 10.
