Ahead of  World Yoga Day on June 21, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that yoga is irrelevant without imposing ban on alcohol in the country and has urged PM Narendra Modi to act upon it.

“Yoga is a natural treatment process but liquor addicts cannot perform it. Yoga would be irrelevant unless a ban is imposed on sale of liquor across the country,” Kumar said at a meeting in Palamau district.

Nitish Kumar hit back on BJP, accusing it turning International Yoga Day event a party affair. “I have been doing Yoga since childhood but have never publicised it,” Kumar said.

“Ban on sale of liquor in Gujarat prevailed since Independence and Modi had no role in it. Hence, he should not try to take credit for it,”

“In a democratic system like ours, welfare of the society should be the priority over trade and business,” he added.

Bihar was declared a dry state, starting April 1 of this year, with the Nitish Kumar government imposing a total ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol. According to The Bihar CM,  his government forfeited Rs 5,000 crore revenue being generated by sale of liquor.

Bihar government claims that the liquor ban has resulted in decline of crime by 27 per cent. Cases of death by  road accidents also reduced, according to  Anand Kishore, Commissioner Patna division.
