The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike goes to polls today. As Bangaloreans come out to elect their corporators, addressing civic problems will be their biggest challenge. While potholes and traffic jams have been major hurdles for daily commuters, the city is yet to adopt a viable way to dispose garbage without making the nearby villages as its waste dumping grounds. Rising rate of pollution has got the city a notorious name. Not just the residents, the filthy, frothy and the fire-spitting lakes too are waiting for a clean-up.

So, BBMP gear up!  This is what the people want you to do:

While bad roads mar the spirit of Bangaloreans, the citizens have often come up with unique initiatives – from deadly-looking anaconda and crocodile installations to taking selfie with a pothole – to draw the attention of the civic authorities towards the pathetic condition of the capital’s roads.

These initiatives have only resulted in shoddy fixes by the authorities and numerous areas of the city still “boast” of pathetic roads. Tired of the inaction by the civic authorities, a resident of Rajajajeshwari Nagar, Vidhya Shree tried to send across a strong message to the civic body. The freelance artist made two placards with the message, “No Road. No Vote”, and this spiralled into a small movement in itself. These pictures sure show you the other side of India’s cleanest capital.

The infrastructure in many parts of the city is pitiable, especially the roadways. Problems ranging from poor condition of the roads, giant potholes, open manholes in busy streets, sewage overflowing in the main roads, and the list goes on.

After seeing the pictures, you may be tempted to ask the BBMP, “Where are the roads?”
