Nostalgia: Reliving India’s glorious World Cup wins in 1983 and 2011
With the 2015 World Cup already under way, we relive some of the magical moments from India’s two most successful campaigns in the tournament’s history.
It all started in 1983, when Kapil’s devils beat the mighty West Indies to lift the trophy for the very first time.
Kapil was, of course, in sublime form himself, with both bat and ball. The skipper’s most memorable innings came against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells, where he scored a glorious, record-breaking 175* which set up a magnificent victory and laid out India’s path to the semis.
And, of course, who can forget that glorious day at Lord’s when the Indians made history?
The picture-perfect moment capturing that final wicket which sealed the victory
And when crowds flooded the holiest of the cricket venues
And here’s Indira Gandhi congratulating the Indian captain
Fast-forward to 2011 and India were at it yet again. This time, at home, against an in-form Sri Lankan side, chasing 275 for the trophy.
It was the sixth and last World Cup for Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and Team India wanted to give him a perfect send-off.
And boy did they do that! Thanks to, primarily this man, who, after dominating the tournament with the bat and ball, showed us a glimpse of his dancing skills!
And then there was glory!
Tears of joy were later washed away with champagne, followed by a fitting farewell to the greatest Indian to have ever graced the game.
What a finale! What a World Cup! And to quote Virat Kohli, what a way to carry the the legend who carried the burden of the nation’s hopes for over two decades!
If this doesn’t bring tears to your eyes, what does?
Do you think the Men in Blue can retain the trophy they won so impressively in 2011?
