A police constable in Mumbai accidentally hung himself while trying to demonstrate to his wife how death row convicts are executed. The incident occurred this afternoon at his residence in Mumbai’s suburban Bhandup.
According to police, Govind Balaji Devde, attached to the Local Arms Division of Mumbai Police, had returned home from work earlier today and was demonstrating how a noose is prepared and death row convicts are hanged.
“After coming home, his wife told him that due to incessant rains the washed clothes were not drying up. She asked him to tie a string inside the house in order to dry the clothes. After fixing a clothesline, Govind took a sari and began to prepare noose,” a police officer was quoted by the Press Trust of India.
During the demonstration the stool on which he stood reportedly tumbled, and as a result he choked. Govind’s panic-struck wife raised an alarm and called her neighbours for help, who brought him down after cutting the noose. He was rushed to a nearby hospital.
According to the police, Govind’s condition is critical.
