Polish Olympic medalist pawned his medal to help pay for the treatment of a cancer patient

Polish discus thrower Piotr Malachowski returned from 2016 Rio Olympics with a proud silver medal. However this athlete had no plans of hanging on to his symbol of triumph. Being nothing short of a hero, he auctioned of the medal to help fund for the treatment of cancer patient.

Piotr put up his medal for auction to help fund the treatment of 3-year-old boy Olek Szymanski, who is suffering from retinoblastoma. The 33-year-old athlete planned to raise $84,000 to pay for the treatment.

Upon posting the medal on Ebay, the bids had gone as high $19,000. However, The Olympic medalist said he had discontinued the auction as Dominika and Sebastian Kulczyk, the Polish billionaire siblings had come forward to buy the medal with enough money to cover the entire treatment cost.

Piotr made a Facebook post thanking the siblings and others for coming forward to help.

“We were able to show that together we can make miracles. My Silver Medal today is worth much more than a week ago. Life is worth little olusia and health. This is our big joint success,” he wrote in his post.

Malachowski did not reveal the amount raised, but said the target, which was close to $130,000, had been met.
