Prince William and Kate Middleton’s #RoyalVisitIndia: Day 1
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and his wife Kate Middleton, began their week-long visit to India and Bhutan with a fundraising event in Mumbai on Sunday. It is their second major trip representing the British crown after a gap of almost two years.
The royal couple first laid a wreath at Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Palace hotel where the 2008 terrorist attacks claimed the lives of 31 people.
Some of India’s biggest names joined the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for a charity gala at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel in Mumbai.
Bollywood stars Shahrukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai, and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar were among those who were present at the fundraising event.
According to reports in The Guardian, the royal couple turned down an invitation to stay at a £9,500-a night Tata suite, as the company is preparing to withdraw its UK steel operations, putting thousands of British jobs at risk.
William and Kate would also be meeting the Indian prime minister Narendra Modi and few conservation groups later. The royal couple will visit the Taj Mahal as well.
They will also visit India’s neighbour Bhutan at the invitation of the Bhutanese king shortly after the Indian tour.
